چکیده

AI and computer-vision techniques to read sign language and improve mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers. With this in mind, AI is being increasingly implemented in various types of tools designed to help the disabled. Those tools include screen readers and computer-navigation aids for the visually impaired, voice-to-text converters for the deaf, neural interfaces that interpret brainwaves to help users operate their wheelchairs and walkers, and assistive gaming technology. Researchers are now also dramatically improving user interfaces for wheelchairs by adding environmental sensors, sign-language training software, and other applications. The market for devices to help the disabled appears to have a bright future, which should drive further development. BCC Research predicts that the market for assistive technologies in the US alone will grow from $38.2 billion in 2008 to $49.3 billion in 2013.

Learning to Manipulate Objects with a Human Teacher

Our research is motivated by the promise of robots that operate in human environments to assist people on a daily basis. It is not feasible to pre-program these robots will every skill needed, they will have to adapt and learn after they are deployed. In our view, these robots should be able to learn on their own–discovering new skills and mastering known skills through practice. Additionally, ...

Beyond Teleoperation: Exploiting Human Motor Skills with MARIOnET

Although machine learning has improved the rate and accuracy at which robots are able to learn, there still exist tasks for which humans can improve performance significantly faster and more robustly than computers. While some ongoing work considers the role of human reinforcement in intelligent algorithms, the burden of learning is often placed solely on the computer. These approaches neglect ...

Reading with Robots: Engaging children to read aloud to robots

Introduction Seymour Papert in Mindstorms highlights the powerful potential technology, especially computers, has in education. He envisions a future where the computer's role goes beyond just " computer-aided instruction, " and instead it becomes an instrument that helps people think and learn creatively. Rather than for computers to " program the child, " the child should take on an active ro...

Cooperative Robots that Learn to Communicate

Models of the world can take many shapes. In this paper, we will discuss how groups of autonomous robots learn languages that can be used as a means for modeling the environment. The robots have already learned simple languages for communication of task instructions. These languages are adaptable under changing situations; i.e. once the robots learn a language, they are able to learn new concep...

Braitenberg Soccer

Well-developed individual and collaborative skills, such as dribbling the ball, positioning, and passing are required for a team of robots to be successful against an opponent team in a robot soccer scenario. This paper proposes an approach to individual and collaborative skill learning, where the robots are modeled as Braitenberg vehicles, and the required skills are implemented as combination...
